釋光測(cè)年儀是對(duì)沉積物上一次曝光事件年代的測(cè)定。自20 世紀(jì)80 年代該方法提出以來(lái),得到了越來(lái)越廣泛的應(yīng)用。相對(duì)于14C測(cè)年,光釋光測(cè)年雖存在誤差偏大的不足(一般5%~10%),但是具有以下明顯優(yōu)勢(shì):
① 其測(cè)年年限范圍比前者大得多;
② 測(cè)年物質(zhì)(石英或長(zhǎng)石)豐富,這在干旱半干旱區(qū)的沙漠和湖泊中尤其重要,因?yàn)樵谶@些地區(qū)很難找到可用于14C測(cè)年的有機(jī)質(zhì);
③ 是對(duì)沉積物的直接定年;
④ 測(cè)年事件包括曝光、受熱(400 ℃以上)、火山、地震和晶體(方解石等)形成等.
